COVID-19 changed the face of the world and things changed rapidly at Curtin, as they did everywhere.
May through July, the Curtin Cares campaign asked for the community’s support as the pandemic impacted our lives. Particularly the lives of our students, as well as nurses and school teachers within the community.
With support from our alumni, staff, partners and friends, Curtin Cares raised $564,024. This is a remarkable response and we couldn’t be more proud.
As the pandemic surged, we worked hard to keep our students on track with their studies, and to support them through their personal and financial challenges. With help from the campaign, Curtin was able to extend hardship bursaries to more than 2,000 students who had lost their usual sources of income and support.
At the same time, we continued to look forward to consider the community’s needs into the future. In addition to student support, Curtin Cares allowed us to help school teachers and nurses manage a variety of challenges.
Our School of Education, for example, provided specialised training and resources to utilise both face-to-face and online learning, to more than 800 teaching students who embarked on professional experience placements within their local communities around Australia. We felt it important to equip both future and current educators with the tools necessary to navigate the classroom during the pandemic, ensuring the continued delivery of high-quality education. The School of Education looks forward to sharing these resources more broadly with educators everywhere on an ongoing basis.
Our School of Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedicine is working to draw together learnings from COVID-19 to upskill nurses and other healthcare workers in dealing with paramedics and their aftermath.
This whole of community effort highlights the magnitude of the impact we can create when we come together. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed.
