The Young Alumni Advisory Board (YAAB) is a team of dedicated, driven and passionate Curtin graduates who embody Curtin’s values of integrity, respect, courage, excellence and impact. Coming from different backgrounds, they are united by their desire to maintain a connection with Curtin University and help other young graduates to do the same.
The YAAB celebrates diversity in all its forms. We value people’s age, culture, ability, sexuality, gender identity, religion, and beliefs. We know that we are stronger and better together and acknowledge that everyone comes with their own lived experience and background. It is important to us that everyone in our community feels safe, valued, included and appreciated, and we are committed to modelling inclusive behaviour. – Jordina Quain, Former Co-President, YAAB

Lending a helping hand during COVID-19
As recent graduates, Curtin’s young alumni truly understand the rising financial pressures of a university education. Throw in a global pandemic and, with no hesitation, the Young Alumni Advisory Board (YAAB) stepped up to provide additional support to students in need.
The Young Alumni Helping Hand Fund (YAHHF) initiative was established in 2017 to support students in financial stress. During the peak of uncertainty, the YAAB seized the opportunity to double its efforts, by also joining forces with the Curtin Cares-about students campaign. Coming together to achieve the best outcome for students during these trying times, was at the forefront.
The YAAB also contributed $3,000 from the YAHHF to the Curtin Student Guild’s Emergency Food Relief program, which enabled the Guild to feed 30 students a day for two weeks!
“International students [which made up 95 per cent of those applying for food aid] have very limited access to financial support. They do not receive government support, and many have lost their jobs and cannot afford rent or food”
– Curtin Student Guild President, Hana Arai
These actions could not have been accomplished without the generosity and support of alumni donors and the fantastic efforts of the YAAB.
“The Young Alumni Helping Hand Fund was established with the mission to support students in need. When the opportunity to assist the Curtin Cares campaign and the Guild’s Emergency Food Relief program was presented to us, it was a simple decision to step in and provide additional support. Both of these initiatives are aligned with the purpose of the YAHHF and it is a great testament to our program and donors that we were able to extend our reach and have such a positive impact.”
– YAAB President, Emily Aldridge
To borrow the immortal words of Coretta Scott King, American author, activist, civil rights leader, and the wife of Martin Luther King Jr, “the greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members” and the action of our young alumni community speaks volumes.
